State purchasing Grandfather Mountain

“The state of North Carolina plans to buy Grandfather Mountain and about 2,600 acres of surrounding wilderness in the Linville area in a $12 million deal, intended to ensure preservation of the area tourist attraction, according to a member of the family who owns the land.
Catherine Morton, marketing director of Grandfather Mountain and daughter of the late Hugh Morton, said the family determined transforming the park into a nonprofit would be the best way to protect the land.
‘The family is very excited,’ Morton said. ‘It gives us piece of mind to know that Grandfather Mountain will remain in the state it is today forever and ever.’”
