Posted on 11 Apr 2008 by Matthew Tyndall

The Charlotte Bobcats are moving their games to Fox Sports Net — tripling the team’s television exposure in the Carolinas — and have agreed to rename their home court Time Warner Cable Arena in a deal announced this morning.”

I’m never a fan of naming stadiums after corporations. It seems to make it so much colder. But I guess I can’t complain since I don’t have millions to name the arena whatever I want. :)

Criticism via-The Meck Deck” made me LOL.
Is there anything they DON’T dislike?
On another note, is that actually the logo (on the Meck Deck page)? Barf! Add some more elements, why don’t you…

It is the logo. I believe they show it in the video also. I think its funny/sad that CABLE is in a bigger font then arena. I agree with you Rosie. The naming it after a corporation does feel cold. Wish they could name it after someone or something but what else in this town isn’t named after some corporate giant???

This is actually a good thing for the Bobcats and the city. It’s a joint deal between the Bobcats and both TW and Fox Sports Net South. Before the Bobcats games were limited to being broadcast on only News 14 — no other cable stations and no satellite. Now the games will get a lot more exposure. There doesn’t even seem to be any money changing hands, at least nothing substantial. The payment for the naming rights might very well be just the broadcast exposure.

Jeff Taylor at The Meck Deck is skeptical of the whole deal, and this was my response to him:

(…) in terms of benefit for the Bobcats, it isn’t just about ticket sales. More TV exposure means more people around the country familiar with the team and the city, which means more tourists might be inclined to catch a game, ride the light rail, check out the new shops/restaurants uptown, etc.. It all just serves to sweeten the taste of Charlotte and the Bobcats in people’s mouths, which tickets/tourism money notwithstanding can lead to more success in future corporate sponsorships for events at the arena, better chances of landing tournament games, all kinds of stuff.

And as for the name, just because a company pays money (or in this case probably didn’t pay anything) to slap their logo on a building doesn’t mean you have to call it what they put on the sign. I don’t know of any laws binding us to this. I still refer to the “Bank of America Stadium” as Panther’s Stadium in conversation, because that’s what it is. I think I speak for a lot of people when I say I’ve got better things to do than concern myself with the corporate flavor of the week.”

Here’s a link to the press release on the arena’s new website. And here’s an AP article covering the change.

tv deal good — logo/name bad although unavoidable these days I suppose.
