High gas prices and Charlotte

Posted on 8 Aug 2008 by Matthew Tyndall

There’s no doubt that one of the hottest topics in the news right now is the rising cost of gas. While gas prices are slowly starting to see a little relief, it’s obvious people are having to find ways to cope. Charlotte is a perfect example of how high gas prices are making people change the way they live their lives.

On July 30th, CATS reported that the purchase of monthly passes for unlimited use of buses and the LYNX increased by 42%. Mary Newsom at the Observer recently wrote an article on how the stigma is slowly being lifted from riding area buses.

It’s not only public transportation that has been affected by high gas prices: the housing market has changed tremendously, and urban sprawl has slowed down. People are realizing that living closer to where they work is more sensible. Be sure to check out another article in the Observer, this one written by Allen Norwood, discussing how realtors are coping with gas prices.

If you’re looking for the best deal on gas, check out the useful Charlotte Gas Prices directory. Or if you really want the best deal (for you and the environment), and your car has a diesel engine, check out Metrolina Biofuels, a local alternative energy co-op that is soon to be Charlotte’s first distributor of 100% biodiesel.

I’ve taken up cycling and transit so I park my car for 3 days a week. It is a better way to experience all the little interesting things you miss seeing while driving.
