Dozens paraded on the sidewalks through Uptown on Sunday afternoon to show support for gay rights and equality. The first annual Charlotte Out Parade took place on October 11th — a date that is celebrated across the country as National Coming Out Day.

According to Mitchell Killman, one of the local organizers of the parade:

National Coming Out Day is a civil awareness day for discussion about issues that affect lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people.

As the parade moved about Uptown, the group paused several times to share stories, experiences, and words of encouragement. Speakers included Shelley DeLux of PFLAG Charlotte, Rev. Catherine Houchins of Metropolitan Community Church, Macy Williams of Charlotte Coalition for Social Justice, and representatives of Piedmont Unitarian Universalist Church, UNC Charlotte Pride, and Pride Charlotte. The need for community building, support, and mutual respect were major topics discussed by the speakers.
