Saturday evening the Charlotte Art League unveiled their Community Mosaic Project Installation at their South End location. The project, designed by local artists and created by more than 300 volunteers, was two years in the making.
According to the Charlotte Art League, the mural is “composed of over 20 panels, covering 250 square feet, containing more than 1,125 pounds of material, and is the result of approximately 5,000+ volunteer hours.”
The mosaic is on display on the exterior of the Charlotte Art League building in historic South End, and is located on Camden near South Tryon. This facility has been home to the forty-four-year-old art league since 1996.

Looks awesome, wish I could have made it out there to see the unveiling.
The weather cooperated just long enough. There was a slide show inside the gallery documenting all the effort & process, but with rain clouds moving in, everyone headed outside to see the big moment. It’s tough to get a sense of the scale & overall effect of the installation from photos — definitely best viewed in person!
I could read a book about this without finding such real-world aroppaches!

Wow-that looked like great fun. So sorry to have missed it. Nice to see familiar faces there.
I’ll spread the word to everyone to come take a look.
It’s a labor of love; beautiful! Has the wow factor.
Does anyone know what kind of panels they used as substrae? What is the best for an external mosaic in the NorthEast. I recently did a mosaic sun for an down town mural project for a local art gallery (Artistic Roots in Plymouth, NH) for the community to go directly on a building, but the owner wanted it removable instead.

Thank you so much for posting these wonderfulpictures! the event was a great success! The scavenger hunt will remain an interactive feature with this permanent installation.
We are very happy for all who came out and enjoyed the unveiling and for the media coverage we got. Charlotte Art League is so appreciative to all the volunteers!
