Mecklenburg County commissioner Neil Cooksey died this afternoon, age 51

Mecklenburg County commissioner Neil Cooksey, who entered hospice care in June after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer, has died, his family announced on a Caring Bridge site on Wednesday.
“It is with an aching heart that I tell you, Neil passed away this afternoon,” states the note. “His long and arduous struggle with pancreatic cancer is finally over, and he won. He is now at peace, in heaven.
No words will ever be adequate to thank the legions of people that have supported our precious family during this time. We are humbled by the outpouring of love.”
Cooksey, 51, joined the Mecklenburg board of county commissioners in 2008 and was in the final months of his second term. He represented District 5 on the board, which includes portions of south Charlotte.
An attorney by trade, Cooksey often pushed for efficiency and accountability while he was on the county board. As a candidate and while in office, Cooksey often stated his goal to bring “common-sense solutions” to county government, including pushing to cut the cost of government.
