You Are Here: Mad Men’s Matthew Weiner trades Madison Avenue for Charlotte’s WTVI

In his first feature directing debut, Matthew Weiner (creator of award winning series Mad Men) will bring a star-studded cast to the offices of Charlotte’s WTVI for his new film You Are Here, a romantic comedy starring Owen Wilson, Zach Galifianakis, and Amy Poehler.
WTVI will serve as the offices of a local news station where weatherman Steve (Owen Wilson) works. Steve is the best friend of Ben (Zach Galifianakis), whose estranged father passes away, leaving him the family store, and plans bigger than Ben ever expected. The film will feature scenes shot in WTVI’s lobby, the studio, and what is currently used as the offices of CLT Blog. Conversion to a working movie set has already begun, and the station is in the process of being transformed.
In the conversion from public television station to on-location Hollywood set, WTVI is receiving a facelift in areas throughout the building. With shooting of the final scenes of the film set to begin as early as Thursday, the race to “flip” WTVI has reached its final leg. If you notice some production vans and tents on Coliseum Blvd, they’re probably part of the production.
Even though this movie will be considerably different from the suits and neatly combed hair of Mad Men, You Are Here has been Weiner’s passion for eight years. This passion will come to fruition with the completion of the film in Charlotte. Considering that the season finale of Mad Men is this Sunday, it’s expected that Weiner will be in the city for the close of yet another astonishing season.
It’s no surprise that Charlotte was considered, with Homeland beginning its second season, not to mention the success The Hunger Games, and the Democratic National Convention coming in September.
