New on A Healthier Charlotte: Environmental Health in the Queen City

Posted on 14 Feb 2012 by Bobby DeMuro

This week on A Healthier Charlotte, we explore the environment. From green companies and products, to global warming, to conservation, we all know a lot about the environment, but what does that mean for Charlotte?

Our guest panel discusses water rights, air pollution, politicizing the environment, and where we’re headed in the future as far as conservation and environmental awareness in the Queen City.

Meet our two-part panel:

Rick Gaskins, Executive Director, Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation
A former environmental lawyer, Rick Gaskins is the Executive Director of the Charlotte-based Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation, a non-profit organization on a mission to protect and conserve the Catawba River and its tributaries.

Benne Hutson, McGuire Woods

Jessica Braswell, PhD, Queens University of Charlotte

Graham Bullock, PhD, Davidson College

Thanks for a good discussion! Interesting stuff on science education, would love to see you all do a show just on that in the future!

Hey Kiran! That’s definitely on the table. Look for it soon!

I’d love to see a show just on that too. I think that’s one of the biggest issues we never talk about today — the death of intelligence for this weird quasi-anti-intelligent religious bend on kids education, like we want to be ignorant. THAT would make for a great discussion.

Love the Catawba River Keeper guys!!

Great discussion guys. Wish more people would focus on what’s being done on the environment specifically in and around CLT… nice job!

Thanks for focusing on the Catawba. It is pretty much my backyard, and not to mention I’m @ the USNWC all the time, and it is DISGUSTING. I know, I know, a lot of rivers are disgusting, but this one is, just, gross. I know how threatened it is. We have to all do more to make the place where WE live more sustainable!

Nice work, guys. When are they going to get you on TV?!

    • Ellen 16 Feb 2012 at 3:26 AM

What’s an open channel number?! lol. They could make their own channel — CLTBTV. That’s too long. BlogTV. YES! Do it!

Great show! Would love to see a big corporation come on and defend their practices if they’re wasting or whatever. But it’s interesting to note the Catawba is dirty not necessarily because of large corporations, but because of individual dumpers and waste folks who don’t know how to properly dispose of that junk. Kudos to Richard and the Catawba Riverkeeper folks for doing good work!

great discussions on this one! Love to see local colleges well repped, because lord knows we have a great set of colleges and professors teaching there around CLT!
