Getting enough sleep? Local experts talk sleep medicine on this week’s A Healthier Charlotte

Posted on 6 Dec 2011 by Bobby DeMuro

This week on A Healthier Charlotte, we bring you three experts on behavioral sleep medicine, integrative health, and stress management.

This episode covers sleep medicine, as well as larger health and lifestyle trends that impact both sleep, and overall health and wellness.

The Issue

Sleep is often be a barometer to overall health. That is, people in good health sleep well, while sleeping problems sometimes indicate an underlying health problem.

Obviously, quality sleep is essential to both physical and emotional health. Unfortunately, even minimal sleep loss takes a toll on outlook, energy, productivity, the ability to handle stress. Ignoring sleep problems can lead to poor health, as well as impacting daily life in a variety of ways. Regardless of age, energy level, job — sleep is a necessity, not a luxury.

The Numbers

Statistics from the National Institutes of Health track the prevalence and incidence of sleeping disorders:

  • More than 40 million Americans each year suffer from chronic, long-term sleep disorders.
  • 20 million more Americans experience occasional sleeping problems. These disorders and the resulting sleep deprivation interfere with work, driving, and social activities.
  • Sleep problems account for more than $16 billion in medical costs each year. [for reference, obesity costs the United States roughly $147 billion in medical costs each year].
  • Doctors have described more than 70 sleep disorders, most of which can be managed once diagnosed.
  • The most common sleep disorders are insomnia, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, and narcolepsy.

This week on the show, three experts provide information and take part in an informative discussion panel on sleep medicine, sleep health, and overall healthy lifestyle choices that impact sleep.

What an interesting concept to do an entire show! I’ve had problems sleeping for years, and have used medications, tried all kinds of stress relaxation and everything, and done everything else under the sun, all to no avail. Good so see someone is talking about this because I know it affects a lot of us more than we realize, and more than it seems.
