Charlotte turns lights off for Earth Hour

“Parts of Charlotte’s skyline will go dark Saturday night as the city joins 2,100 others in a global statement for action on climate change.

Earth Hour asks people to turn off the lights for an hour – but save energy all the time.

At 8:30 p.m. Saturday, nonessential lights will be doused at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center, the Education Center, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police headquarters, Duke Energy and at least some uptown towers, including Gateway Village, Charlotte Plaza and the Carillon.”

    Ok this might be silly but “nonessential lights will be doused”? Shouldn’t nonessential lights be turned out all the time? Why just for 1 hour 1 day out of the year? Just sayin’.

    I totally agree. Demonstrations like this don’t make any sense to me.

    I agree with Rosie and Justin in that we should be more vigilant in this on a daily bases but, I am glad that Charlotte is participating and taking steps in the right direction. This is one way we can help to get the awareness out that we have got to take steps now to save our home.

    First of all, It’s great to see Charlotte government offices and center city parters participating in something worthwhile, not just patting themselves on their backs, as they are constantly inclined to do. They have finally found something to do that doesn’t waste money.
    Secondly, I think the idea is to get conservation in the conciousness of our global community, demonstrated by dimming your non-essential lights (such as the front door light, or watching tv in the dark for an hour. It would unrealistic to do that EVERY DAY, don’t ya think?).

    I’m all for being green and energy efficient, but when hype and participation overshadow the amount of effort required and any tangible results, then it can become a bit of grandstanding. The best joke I heard about Earth Hour: “I just participated in Earth Hour. Now I’m going to go masturbate while thinking about what a GOOD person I am.”

    Another example: Product [RED]. I bet the people who work in the sweatshops making these products are TI[RED].
